Philosophy of Mathematics
Mathematics is a subject that requires a lot of thought and analysis to find the answer to certain problems. Many people think that math is simple and not as abstract as it can be, but when learning higher level mathematics you will soon realize it is not as easy as it may seem. Learning from experience you need to learn skills from each class in most cases to figure out an answer. Math always comes back and relates back to certain topics for example you still use simple math skills like addition and subtraction in complex topics like abstract algebra and calculus. Using mathematical logic when trying to prove something in mathematics is what most math majors should be able to do. Mathematics teaches you how to strategize and think outside of the box and be concrete when it comes to either proving something or solving equations.
Wanting to be a mathematics teacher has made me realize that being a teacher is a lot of work and you have to be able to make the students understand what you are trying to teach them, you have to make it fun for them. Being able to make it fun for the students will help them acquire those skills and be able to use effectively in the classroom. But I realized that it was not for me and I came to the conclusion that instead of being a math teacher I can use the mathematical skills I’ve learned and combine them with a topic that interests me just as much as mathematics and that is business. Business is a very broad topic and I thought to myself mathematics and business can go hand in hand together. For example in companies you need to be able to calculate production costs, determine pricing, measure profits and analyze your finances. These are just some skills that businesses and companies need to be able to balance their production and workers. Mathematics is everywhere in businesses and without being able to do simple mathematics those things in business would not be possible.
Learning about business and how it can relate to my studies of mathematics makes me understand the importance of why I became mathematics major. I will be able to understand how they intertwine and work well together and how I can use mathematical reasoning to problem solve as well as being able to calculate equations. I can use this reasoning to help solve problems relating to areas in business for example banking requires lots of math based counting as well as accounting using a lot of numbers. The logic and skills I learned in the classes I took will help me and relate them to the business world and help me succeed with whatever I choose to do in life whether its business or mathematics.
